![]() The filesystems repository contains source code for several exciting and useful file systems for you to browse, compile, and build upon, such as sshfs, procfs, AccessibilityFS, GrabFS, LoopbackFS, SpotlightFS, and YouTubeFS. If you prefer another language (say, Python or Java), you should be able to create file systems in those languages after you install the relevant language bindings yourself. It comes with C-based and Objective-C-based SDKs. OSXFuse is one such tool, a free open source offering that allows OS X to read EXT volumes, and if you’re comfortable with some uncertainty and risk to the Linux partition, you can even enable an experimental EXT write function too. The macFUSE software consists of a kernel extension and various user space libraries and tools. Therefore, many existing FUSE file systems become readily usable on macOS. It provides multiple APIs, one of which is a superset of the FUSE API (file system in user space) that originated on Linux. In more technical terms, FUSE implements a mechanism that makes it possible to implement a fully functional file system in a user-space program on macOS. Since FUSE file systems are regular applications (as opposed to kernel extensions), you have just as much flexibility and choice in programming tools, debuggers, and libraries as you have if you were developing standard macOS applications. Writing a file system using FUSE is orders of magnitude easier and quicker than the traditional approach of writing in-kernel file systems. The content of these file systems can come from anywhere: from the local disk, from across the network, from memory, or any other combination of sources. Legacy MacFUSE file systems are supported through the optional MacFUSE compatibility layer.Īs a developer, you can use the FUSE SDK to write numerous types of new file systems as regular user space programs. files open just fine - regardless whether Google Chrome was running at mount time.MacFUSE allows you to extend macOS's native file handling capabilities via third-party file systems.Īs a user, installing the macFUSE software package will let you use any third-party FUSE file system. If no custom volume name is set, the problem seems not to occur and Excel/Word/etc. The problem seems only to occur when the "volname" mount option is used. ![]() Do not use the "volname" mount option.Use the "local" mount option (which might introduce other problems and is generally not recommend to use). The two possible "fixes" (or rather "workarounds") for this issue seem to be (for now): The odd thing is that there are no issues when using the stock network file systems afp or smb. There might be a bug in the Carbon/CarbonCore framework.I’ve been looking into this for some time now but I have not found any clues supporting this. osxfuse might break the VFS file system contract on Mavericks. ![]() In my opinion the two most likely reasons for this are: But from this point on Office will fail to open documents. As far as I can tell all these file system operations return successful without any errors. Every time a volume is mounted Chrome queries the volume’s capabilities and attributes (and maybe more). I believe the issue is somehow related to Carbon since non-Carbon apps do not seem to be affected. Using LibreOffice to open the file on the FUSE volume works, too.Ĭhrome and Office seem to be based on the Carbon framework (which is deprecated since Mountain Lion). In previous releases local file system operations could mask remote writes, resulting in the local cache not being invalidated. When autocache is enabled, we try to detect remote file changes in the getattr callback and invalidate the files cache. After copying the files to another volume they open just fine. Fix autocache mount option on Apple Silicon. The odd thing is that the files are not corrupted or empty. So far I have not found any bugs in osxfuse that might explain this behavior. ![]() Please also see his answer regarding this issue on the OSXFUSE mailing list: We've been in contact with Benjamin (OSXFUSE developer). If Google Chrome is not running, Word/Excel/etc. When Google Chrome is running while the volume is mounted, the problem appears. We have been able to track down the problem to - wait for it - Google Chrome. ![]()
